Join myself and Connor Stefanison in the heart of British Columbia’s interior, for an exciting five days of nature photography! A gorgeous and spacious lakefront cabin will serve as our home base from which we’ll depart each morning in our low, stable boats, to explore the beautiful lake and its amazing assortment of birds. One of many highlight species is of course the regal Common Loon. Numerous pairs return to the lake each spring and summer to raise chicks, many of which we’ve spent season after season with — establishing a unique trust. We'll photograph these gorgeous birds as they shuttle aquatic insects and small fish to their growing young, who will often ride atop their parents' backs. Additionally, we'll spend time with the lake's multiple pairs of Red-ecked Grebes, Bonaparte's gulls, and a myriad of other wildlife. The action isn't limited to our time in the boats — after all, it isn’t just the loons that have lead this to be widely regarded as one of North America’s preeminent wildlife photography workshops, and undoubtedly the most diverse. Many photographers have taken this trip three or four times, coming away with entirely unique images from each visit. World-class opportunities with nesting Great Grey Owls have also become a staple of this workshop. Experiencing special moments with these birds and their young, far off the beaten path, is a lifetime wildlife experience in and of itself. Donning chest waders and submerging into a pond might seem like an odd way to spend part of your vacation (it is), but as Eared Grebes and displaying Ruddy Ducks surround you, the photos will speak for themselves. Close encounters with Sora, American avocet, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Horned Grebe, Blue-winged Teal, and several other species of waterfowl, will round out an amazing portfolio of marsh birds. For those joining us during the first half of June, tucking into blinds in the predawn light, as the arrival of dozens of Sharp-tailed Grouse marks the start of a new day, will be yet another wildlife experience worthy of its own dedicated trip. The sounds, let alone the elaborate dancing displays, will stick with you indefinitely. Time will be dedicated to photographing even more pre-scouted sites for cavity nesting species such as Black-backed, American Three-toed, Hairy, and Downy Woodpeckers, Northern Flicker, Red-naped Sapsucker, and Mountain Bluebirds. Red foxes of the unique cross colour morph are numerous in the area. Den sites have provided excellent photography opportunities throughout the last several years. At the height of spring, there’s simply not enough time to photograph all of the songbirds that occupy these vast temperate forests, but we’ll enjoy encounters with a variety of warblers, vireos, and the beautiful Western Tanager. In addition to the reliable subjects and high levels of instruction for which this trip has become well-reputed, each year brings new opportunities. One year we might watch Northern Pygmy-Owls fledge from their nest, Mountain Bluebirds shuttling enormous dragonflies to their young, or have a Moose swim past the boats. The potential for amazing discoveries is what makes this location and time of year so special, and keeps things so engaging for both guests and guides alike. Should the weather throw us a curveball, or we’re simply in need of some time to recharge, our beautiful lakeside accommodation will be the perfect place to rest, review images, and enjoy the scenery.

This workshop tends not to involve any technical or serious hiking, and the majority of our shooting locations are a short distance from the vehicles. The ability to comfortably carry your gear on relatively flat trails (some of which may be rooty, rocky, and muddy) for 1 - 2 km (0.6 - 1.2 miles) will be beneficial, though not imperative. Age and physical limitations do not tend to be at all restrictive during this workshop.

One of the many aspects that sets our trips apart is the meticulous attention given to each and every one of our participants. Other than to demonstrate angles and techniques, it’s rare that Connor and I take our own photographs during our workshops.
Photographing wildlife is our passion too, but we save that for our own time, and always prioritize maximizing your enjoyment and productivity. -
Our local expertise allows us to adapt to all the variables we’re presented with as nature photographers, such as the often changeable weather, and wildlife activity. With that in mind, each day will bring something new, and our exact schedule is liable to change throughout the day.
Following registration, further information is provided in a detailed introductory video.

A high level of instruction is offered to all those registered. Some participants may solely be interested in our guidance to the best sites for their target species, others may be seeking greater education on the ins and outs of nature photography, wildlife, ecology, etc.
We’re confident in our ability to exceed your expectations, whatever those may be.
WHY CHOOSE OUR WORKSHOPS
We are grateful to be reputed as two of North America’s top wildlife photography guides; focused on personalized attention, and of course the overall enjoyment and well-being of our valued clients.
Our backgrounds in biology allow us to better understand the ecology and behaviour of our subjects; translating into better photographic opportunities for the participants we guide.
Both Connor and I grew up in the places we guide, leading to an in-depth knowledge of the area's geography, weather, birds and other wildlife.
All of the images you see showcasing our trips were taken at the locations we will visit, and at the same time of year.
As is evident in the gallery below, these are often exceeded in quality by the images taken by our trip participants.Limited group sizes and two guides/instructors translates into more one-on-one teaching opportunities for each photographer.
We are passionate about, and well-versed in a variety of different techniques/approaches, and are equally passionate about helping others achieve excellence in the styles of photography that interest them most.
Apart from demonstrating angles, composition, and other techniques, we will not be shooting. Our time is dedicated to helping you achieve the best results, not making our own images.

We pride ourselves on operating our workshops with tact and consideration for our valued participants. We will do our very best to fill your space and reimburse you, should you be met with extenuating circumstances. Our expectation is that same consideration be extended to us, as small business owners — consequently, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to ensure you can be reimbursed for costs ineligible for refund, and unjust losses aren't imposed on us.
* The workshop fee (including deposit) will be eligible for refund should restrictions surrounding COVID-19 prevent us from operating the trip, or prevent your participation - including prohibition of cross-border travel, and interprovincial travel. This does not include complications surrounding COVID testing prior to flights, or other unforeseeable matters pertaining to travel. This also does not include prevention of participation due to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, or any other illness (if within the 60-day limitation). *
