Born and raised just outside Vancouver, in Burnaby, British Columbia – an area rich in biodiversity – it didn't take Jess long to spark an interest in the natural world. His childhood was spent hiking and birdwatching with his family, throughout the Pacific Northwest. With help from his father, an avid hobbyist nature photographer at the time, this interest in the outdoors developed into a passion for artistically documenting living creatures and dramatic landscapes. In 2011, Jess was awarded the International Youth Photographer of the Year award from Nature's Best Photography; prompting him to further pursue this serious hobby. Since then, Jess has gone on to be awarded several times in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, among other accolades. Photography has brought him deep into the backcountry of the Pacific Northwest, and throughout remote regions of Central and South America. Living in an area with charismatic wildlife rivalled only by the surrounding scenery, Jess has developed a unique style combining elements from both landscape and wildlife photography; creating contextual images that bridge the gap, speaking to both the animal's and environment's story. Equally at home alone in the wilderness or in a group setting sharing his experiences, Jess is eager to continue exploring; raising awareness about the world's incredible natural beauty, as well as guiding photography workshops to help others pursue their passion. Jess' work has been displayed at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, the London Natural History Museum in the UK and the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, Canada. He has also lectured aboard Cunard Cruise Liners, and at the renowned Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles, California.

Artist Statement

The photographs you see here on my website represent my experiences in the field. As such, they have not been significantly altered, with no elements removed or added during post production. In order to retain the natural quality and authenticity of what I observed, minor adjustments to colour, contrast and sharpness have been made.

All of the subjects are completely wild, and are, by and large, self-found. My passion, first and foremost, is for better understanding wildlife and the environments in which they live. The challenge of using one’s experience to locate unique sites, far off the beaten path, is something I embrace and enjoy most about this pursuit. Delving into the myriad of questions that arise during this process is what fuels me more than all else. If I’m fortunate to capture something that I’m proud of, and can share that result with you here on my website, I’m thrilled, but this is secondary to the time I’m privileged to spend contemplating the puzzles of the natural world.

When I’m not occupied by my nature photography ambitions, I get great enjoyment out of exploring the mountains in any capacity, and spend many days of the year pursuing climbing, trail-running, and mountaineering objectives in southwestern British Columbia.

I really appreciate your interest in my work. If you’re interested in having one of my photographs hanging in your home, or would like to send one as a gift, I invite you to browse the options in
my online Print Store. For any fellow photographers interested in exploring some truly special places, and improving your skills, I hope to see you in the field someday on one of my workshops.
