FLAMMULATED OWL

BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA

After eleven days of backcountry hiking, searching for one of Canada’s most elusive, and seldom-photographed birds,
this encounter with a Flammulated Owl was one of the most memorable moments as a nature photographer.

This particularly red individual showcases the remarkable crypsis found in this species whose local populations select for plumage colour-matched to the area’s predominate tree bark.
